Meet the Designer: Gustav Hennecke PART II

In the last UNZIPPED article, we introduced our designer Gustav Hennecke. Gustav is a product designer at TITAN and an expert when it comes to shapes, functions and, of course, suitcases.
In the second part of Meet the Designer, you will get tips on what a designer would look for when buying a suitcase, what actually distinguishes TITAN suitcases from other suitcases and why a small screw sometimes makes a big difference.

About Gustav

About Gustav

Gustav Hennecke is a passionate designer; even as a child, drawing objects was one of his favourite pastimes. In addition to the creative drawing process, it was above all the different shapes of objects that inspired him and prompted him to scrutinise existing designs. The desire to become a product designer developed during his studies at the latest, when his interest in the function of objects outweighed that of artistic design. Gustav has been with TITAN since 2017 and is responsible for all our designs as a product designer.

Gustav, what do you think distinguishes a TITAN suitcase from other luggage?

We think quality down to the smallest detail. We attach great importance to every component and pay attention to very good and consistent workmanship. Of course, there are other manufacturers who also offer high quality, but they like to save on components such as the roll or the zip. At TITAN, 100 per cent quality is in every component and you can feel it when you use our cases.

What is special for you about working for TITAN?

Above all, I like being part of the vision of developing the best cases and producing them in Germany in our own factory. At TITAN, I have the opportunity to work on a wide variety of topics every day, such as design, technical development and materials. We focus on the product down to the last detail, so sometimes the search for the perfect screw can take several weeks. Even if it's just a small element, these meticulous processes are crucial for us in order to optimise the quality and functionality of the case. I am involved in many components, from the idea through development and design to production, and can contribute my own ideas and influence processes. It's a lot of fun and something very special, something that doesn't exist in this form in many manufacturing companies.

What functions or features do you think buyers should look out for when buying a suitcase?

In addition to the question of the right suitcase size, it is particularly important to me that my suitcase has a well thought-out interior layout. Personally, I like suitcases with closed packing walls in both shells because each side of the suitcase can be closed individually with a zip. This keeps everything in place and I don't accidentally catch an item of clothing hanging out when closing the suitcase. The quality of the components is also very important to me, especially really quiet-running and sufficiently large wheels. Nothing is worse than a suitcase that rattles loudly over the pavement and is difficult to manoeuvre. One point that is often forgotten when buying is the service. If the suitcase does break down, it is very annoying when customers only get their suitcase back after two to three months from the repair. Or if spare parts are no longer available and the case can no longer be repaired. I would ask about this at the time of purchase, especially if I decide in favour of a more expensive case.

What makes a TITAN case so special for you?

For me, it's the overall package of quality, well thought-out features and manufacturing in Germany. The quality of the product simply makes it fun to use the case. We also make sure that our cases are repairable. We can replace all external components, the interior straps and even the entire inner lining of our frame cases. We also put a lot of heart and soul into each of our suitcases. Every time I see one of our suitcases at the airport or train station, it always fills me with a little pride. A suitcase from TITAN is genuinely handmade in Germany, which is something very special in this day and age.
