WITH CUSTOMISED WORK TO SUCCESS

Anna Berreiter is one of the most successful female lugers. She won the silver medal at the 2022 Winter Olympics. The following year, she won two world championship titles. When she sets new best times, it's all about precision. However, this begins even before the start in the ice channel - namely when making her sled. Anna is certain: it's the manual labour, the attention to detail and the materials that make the difference.

You discovered luge at the age of 7. What is it that still draws you to the ice track today?

Anna Berreiter:

"Even as a child, I was fascinated by speed. Luge is one of the fastest sports in the world. It is measured to a thousandth of a second. These are fractions of a second that you can't even stop with your mobile phone. So it's all about precision and avoiding the smallest mistakes. I have to make decisions at lightning speed. Milliseconds decide whether I win or lose."

What role does your sled play in these decisions?

Anna Berreiter:

"My sledge is a high-performance device. It is made by hand. The precision that is demanded of me in the ice channel is already in every detail. I assemble it myself with technicians and pay attention to the tiniest millimetre. The question of which material to use is one of the first decisions I have to make. For me, this really is the highest art of engineering - customised work that determines my success and is really close to my heart."

Sounds like you've built up an emotional bond with your sled.

Anna Berreiter:

"My sledge is my sanctuary. I want to have it with me all the time. I worked on it myself and know the manual labour, love and precision behind it. It also makes me proud that I know where all the parts come from. It's a unique piece that you can't buy anywhere else and that is constantly evolving with me. We're always looking at what we can change to make it even better."

Is that what it's always about for you - getting better?

Anna Berreiter:

"There's no going back in luge. Once I've set off, there's only one direction. So far, my career has been an up and down ride. There have been ups and downs. But I've always progressed. Quitting was never an option for me. Looking back, I can say that the downs have made me even stronger. When I've learnt something new, I want to bring it to the ice. I always want to achieve the best possible result and, despite my past successes, I'm certain: I'm not finished with my story yet."

What does travelling mean to you?

Anna Berreiter:

"I think day and night about how I can improve. Of course, it's also important for me to find a balance. For me, travelling means getting out and getting away from everyday life. It really enriches me to immerse myself in other cultures and get to know new places. And then there's the time thing: every second counts in the ice channel. Slowing down on holiday and not even having a watch with you is the perfect balance for me."
