Three factors determine whether a suitcase is suitable for your trip: external dimensions, internal volume and weight. They are interrelated, but describe different things.

External dimensions
External dimensions describe the actual space a suitcase occupies, specified as height × width × depth and including all fixed components such as wheels, handles and side pockets. These are precisely the dimensions checked at check-in and at the measuring device at the gate. That is why TITAN lists the dimensions of all models, including all fitted parts.

Volume
The volume in litres describes the usable packing space. Two suitcases with the same external dimensions can have different volume values because wall thickness, frame construction and internal organisation can either take up or create space. As a guide, allow around 10 litres per day of travel. If you pack compactly, you can get by with less.

Empty weight
The suitcase’s own weight counts towards the total weight measured by the airline. With a 23 kg free baggage allowance and a suitcase weighing 3.9 kg, that leaves 19.1 kg for the contents; if the suitcase weighs 5 kg, it leaves 18 kg. The difference is roughly equivalent to a pair of shoes. The polycarbonate models in the UPGRADE and OVERSEAS ranges weigh between 2.7 and 4.9 kg, depending on their size.

Cabin luggage: a comparison of airline regulations
There is no binding standard for cabin luggage. Each airline sets its own dimensions, and even within a single airline, this depends on the fare. The TITAN S20, measuring 55 × 40 × 20 cm, meets the requirements of almost all Airlines, including Ryanair’s Priority fare. The S23, measuring 55 × 40 × 23 cm, offers 6 to 7 litres more packing capacity and is cabin-approved by network airlines such as Lufthansa, Swiss and Eurowings, but not by Ryanair.

Checked luggage: What the 158-cm rule means
With most Airlines worldwide, the 158-cm rule applies to checked-in luggage: the sum of the height, width and depth must not exceed 158 cm. All TITAN check-in suitcases remain within this limit. The M measures 138 cm, the M+ 147 cm, whilst the L, at 158 cm, makes full use of the permitted limit.
The suitcase’s own weight also counts, as it is deducted from the free baggage allowance. With a typical allowance of 23 kg and the ‘ UPGRADE ’ L model weighing 3.9 kg, that leaves 19.1 kg for the contents. The ‘ OVERSEAS ’ models weigh around 0.7 to 1.0 kg more, depending on size, whilst the ‘ ETERNITY ’ – being an aluminium suitcase – is correspondingly heavier.
Which suitcase size is best for which trip?
Not every trip places the same demands on your luggage. Here are four typical situations and the right size for each:
S20 or S23
Short breaks and weekends
For one to three days, carry-on luggage is sufficient. Measuring 55 × 40 × 20 cm, the S20 fits in the cabin on almost all Airlines flights, whilst the S23 offers a few litres more if the airline allows a depth of 23 cm. Both sizes save you from having to wait at the baggage carousel.
S23 or M
Business trip
For business trips, the most important thing is that suits and blouses arrive crease-free. The S23 is sufficient for two to four days; for longer stays or a larger change of clothes, the M is the right choice.
M or M+
Holiday week
For five to ten days, the M size, with a capacity of 68 litres, is the obvious choice. If you’re taking shoes, sportswear or extra changes of clothes, opt for the M+ with up to 84 litres.
L
Long-haul travel and family holidays
For trips of ten days or more, or when travelling through different climate zones, the L size offers the necessary space with around 100 litres. With a total dimension of exactly 158 cm, it makes full use of the allowances set by most Airlines.
If you’re travelling as a couple, one large suitcase may be more practical for both of you than two medium-sized ones: an L offers more usable volume than two S23s combined and saves you a baggage fee. The downside is the weight, as a fully packed L can quickly reach the 23-kg limit.
Choosing the right suitcase size: packing tips
Choosing the right size is half the battle; packing is the other half. Four simple steps that make all the difference:
- Roll rather than fold. Rolled clothes make better use of the space and crease less.
- Place heavy items at the bottom. Shoes and toiletries bags should be placed near the wheels to stabilise the centre of gravity.
- Use packing cubes. They create structure and make it easier to find things once you arrive at your destination.
- Fill any empty spaces. Put socks in your shoes, tuck belts around the edges: that way, nothing goes to waste.
